THE ROOM

In a 24-hour hackathon, I was placed in a team of 2 UX Designers and 3 Software Developers. Our Industry Partner, UKG enters the room and gave us a pretty big task; to conceptualize and pitch a product to leverage AI and Machine Learning to bring people centric Human Capital Management offerings to the market.

THE GOAL

REDUCE BURNOUT 

After discussing and exploring possible spaces to incorporate we thought of employees who need and deserve the most love -- nurses. 

As a team, we decided to focus on, how might we empower nurses to have a space where they can disconnect from work so that they can have the time to care for their health? So then, UX Designers & Software Engineers collaborated to make magic happen! ✨

 

We hope an interactive calendar that is able to be adaptive to an employee’s emotions will help reduce burnout in healthcare and in other fields. 🤞

After conducting research we discovered that healthcare workers have an extremely high burnout rate and have very little time to self heal. We wanted to create a digital solution that would help nurses in anyway.

So, we set out to answer why?

PRIMARY RESEARCH

NURSES ASK FOR A BREAK

Racing against the clock, we scrambled to gather and interview 5 nurses. We began to empathize with nurses as we better understood their daily struggles, the behaviors they fall into, and their relentless motivation.

In addition to the demands of the job, all 5 nurses experience constant frustrations requesting time off when needed. To top it all off, once the time is finally requested & approved, nurses are unable to disconnect as they are called and requested to help due to staff shortage -- making it almost impossible to take the time required to truly disconnect and heal.

Nurses are exhausted of mental and emotional energy. They want to have more time to self-heal so they can be their best selves for family, friends and patients.

Requesting Time Off

Nurses find the process of requesting time off extremely stressful- It's highly competitive and takes a lot of coordinating from different parties.

Stress & Guilt

Nurses feel like they can't fully disconnect during breaks. They fear the hospital will call due to scheduling conflicts/ shortage and feel guilty saying "no" to helping. 

"It can be stressful when they try calling you, but I can't go because I'm away on vacation."

We want to empower nurses to efficiently manage their schedule without stress and to trust that they will be given the space needed to heal, while optimizing usability. 

Business Goal: 
We want to ensure a 
people centric Human Capital Management to reduce employee burnout. The primary metrics we’ll be looking at is task success rate, user error rate and time-on-task.

We created an app that put nurses in the center of care

The current result empowers nurses to take the time needed to self heal, foster a meaningful relationship with employers built on trust, and minimize additional stress-associated burnout. 

AI & ML

AI and Machine Learning will be incorporated to assist in managing the well-being of all staff.

 

For example, AI/ ML suggests to a manager that a nurse is in need of a break based on factual data depending on the nurses interactions with the system such as number of hours worked, cases handled, and PTO.

Using this data, the application will suggest managers and staff when it is the right moment to take time off, the amount of days needed and to what degree.

 

Future Impact

Our solution is scalable and extensible for future models and use cases. What we made today for nurses can be marketed for all frontline workers

Just like nurses, most frontline workers are facing burnout. Let’s empower hardworking professionals to take a break and feel that it is ok to do so.
